General Manager – Timber, Agricultural & Builders Merchant

Overview
W Burton & Sons is a long-established timber, agricultural and builders merchant with two operational depots at Bramshall Farm, Uttoxeter and Threapwood Cheadle serving trade and retail customers across Staffordshire and surrounding counties.
We are seeking a commercially driven General Manager to take operational management at our Bramshall Farm depot. This is a senior, hands-on role focused on people leadership, operational efficiency, stock accuracy, health & safety, and driving sales performance.
The successful candidate will play a key role in improving consistency, structure and commercial discipline across both sites although your primary responsibility will be the Bramshall farm depot.
The Role
As General Manager, you will have full responsibility for day-to-day operation and performance. You will organise teams, oversee stock and logistics, support sales activity, and ensure the business operates safely, efficiently and profitably.
This role requires someone who is confident managing operational detail, comfortable with figures, and motivated by improving performance through better systems, planning and accountability.
Operational Management
• Overall responsibility for daily operations
• Organise and coordinate staff across yard, warehouse, counter and office functions
• Ensure efficient use of people, vehicles and equipment
• Maintain consistent operational standards across both depots
Staff Leadership & Organisation
• Lead, manage and develop depot teams
• Rota planning, absence management and cover arrangements
• Set clear expectations and monitor performance
• Support recruitment, onboarding and training
Stock Control & Accuracy
• Responsibility for stock control, accuracy and availability
• Oversee ordering, goods-in processes and stock rotation
• Reduce stock discrepancies, waste and operational losses
• Ensure systems and physical stock align
Deliveries & Logistics
• Plan and oversee delivery schedules and vehicle utilisation
• Coordinate deliveries between depots where required
• Ensure customer orders are fulfilled accurately and on time
Sales, Quotes & Commercial Performance
• Support counter sales and trade customers
• Oversee quotations, pricing discipline and order accuracy
• Build strong relationships with key customers and suppliers
• Monitor sales performance and margins
- Comfortable working with figures and performance data
- Contribute to marketing efforts
Health & Safety & Compliance
• Responsibility for health & safety
• Ensure compliance with legal, operational and site requirements
• Promote a strong safety culture in yard, warehouse and office environments
Skills Requirement
- Proven experience in a builders merchant, timber merchant, agricultural merchant or similar trade environment
- Experience managing operational teams and multiple departments
- Confident working across more than one site
- Strong organisational and leadership skills
- Commercially minded and comfortable working with figures
- Able to plan, prioritise and make decisions
- Strong customer and supplier relationship skills
- Practical, hands-on and credible with staff
- Forklift, H&S or industry-specific certifications beneficial but not essential
