Product Description
European Oak Hardwood Boards
European Oak is a premium hardwood valued for its strength, durability and distinctive natural appearance. Its heartwood typically ranges from light tan to warm biscuit-brown, with a generally straight grain that may also show attractive irregular or cross-grained figure.
Quarter-sawn boards can display the characteristic silver grain or medullary ray figure for which oak is well known. This natural variation makes European Oak particularly suitable for high-quality furniture, joinery and decorative woodworking where appearance is as important as performance.
European Oak is a tough, hard-wearing timber with good structural qualities and excellent steam-bending characteristics. It is suitable for both traditional and contemporary projects and can be finished in a wide range of styles.

Working properties
European Oak can be worked successfully with hand tools and woodworking machinery, although its density and hardness can have a noticeable blunting effect on cutters. Sharp tools are recommended to achieve a clean finish.
Quarter-sawn timber can require particular care during planing or moulding because of the grain direction. Pre-drilling is advisable when fixing near board ends or edges to reduce the risk of splitting.
European Oak responds particularly well to:
- Sanding and polishing
- Wax and oil finishes
- Staining and colouring
- Liming
- Fuming
Clear protective coatings
Always test a finish on an offcut or inconspicuous area first, as natural tannins and grain variation can affect the final appearance.
Durability and exterior use
The heartwood of European Oak is naturally durable, making it suitable for a variety of exterior and exposed applications when the timber is correctly selected, detailed and maintained.
The sapwood is less durable than the heartwood and should not be relied upon in exposed situations unless it has received appropriate treatment.
Tannins, staining and fixings
European Oak contains naturally occurring tannins. These can react with ordinary steel or iron and cause dark blue or black staining in the timber. The same reaction can also contribute to corrosion of unsuitable metal fixings.
For best results, use:
- Stainless steel fixings
- Galvanised fixings
- Other suitable non-ferrous fittings
Avoid leaving steel particles, wet metal tools or iron filings in contact with the wood, particularly when the timber is damp.
Tannins may also leach from freshly installed oak when exposed to rain. Care should therefore be taken where runoff could stain nearby masonry, paving or rendered surfaces.
Seasoning and storage
European Oak dries relatively slowly and can develop surface checks, end splits or distortion if it is dried or stored incorrectly. Boards should be stored flat, supported evenly and protected from rapid changes in temperature and humidity.
Some surface checking and minor end splitting can occur naturally in solid oak and may be expected depending on the size and grade of the timber.
Natural timber variation
European Oak is a natural hardwood, so every board will vary in colour, grain pattern, figuring and texture. Natural features may include:
- Colour variation
- Medullary rays
- Small knots
- Mineral markings
- Grain changes
- Surface checks or end splits
Product photographs and swatches are representative of the species and should not be treated as an exact match for every board supplied. These natural variations are part of the character and appeal of genuine European Oak.
