Product Description
Tulipwood is a practical and highly workable North American hardwood that has earned a strong reputation with professional joiners, cabinetmakers and furniture makers. Despite its common name, it is not related to the tropical timber sometimes also called tulipwood; the timber we supply is the North American hardwood commonly associated with the tulip tree.
One of Tulipwood’s principal advantages is its machining performance. It works readily with both hand and machine tools and is well suited to sawing, planing, routing, moulding, turning, drilling and sanding. It can produce clean, accurately machined components and takes glue, fixings, paint and other finishes well when correctly prepared.
The timber is generally straight grained with a relatively fine, even texture. Colour can vary considerably within and between boards. The sapwood is typically creamy white to pale yellow, while the heartwood can introduce yellow-brown, olive-green, grey, brown and occasional darker or purplish streaks. These variations are a natural characteristic of the species rather than a defect.
A particularly useful timber for painted joinery
Tulipwood is frequently selected where the finished component will be painted. Its combination of good machining characteristics, stability and relatively unobtrusive grain makes it particularly useful for paint-grade furniture and interior joinery, where using a more decorative hardwood may offer little practical benefit.
It can also be used with clear or stained finishes where its natural colour variation and character are appropriate to the project. As with any hardwood, we recommend testing stains and finishing systems on an offcut first where a particular appearance is required.
Typical uses
Tulipwood is suitable for a broad range of interior woodworking applications, including:
- Bespoke furniture and cabinetmaking
- Kitchen and fitted furniture components
- Interior doors and joinery
- Mouldings and machined profiles
- Panelling and decorative interior timberwork
- Shelving and furniture components
- Turning and general woodworking
- Painted joinery and furniture
Tulipwood should primarily be regarded as an interior joinery hardwood. It does not have the natural exterior durability of species such as European Oak or Iroko, so we would not normally recommend it where long-term resistance to external weathering or ground contact is required.
Available rough sawn thicknesses
Our Tulipwood is currently available in the following nominal thicknesses:
25.4mm (1″)
38.1mm (1½”)
50.8mm (2″)
The timber is supplied rough sawn rather than planed to a finished dimension. Nominal thicknesses therefore describe the sawn stock size and should not be treated as guaranteed finished dimensions.
Please allow a tolerance of approximately ±4–5mm. Boards will also naturally require machining to achieve a flat, square and consistent finished section. When calculating the material required for a project, sufficient allowance should therefore be made for planing, straightening, edging and other machining operations.
Natural hardwood variation
Tulipwood is a natural sawn hardwood product, so colour, grain, width, figure and other characteristics will vary from board to board. Minor surface checking, machining allowance and other features associated with rough sawn hardwood should be expected.
For professional joinery work, this variation is part of selecting and machining solid timber rather than an indication that every board will arrive at an identical finished dimension.
For joiners looking for a reliable, easily machined and versatile hardwood, particularly for interior and painted work, Tulipwood represents an excellent workshop timber with applications ranging from straightforward mouldings to high-quality bespoke furniture and fitted joinery.
