Product Description
Sapele Hardwood Boards
Sapele is a high-quality African hardwood prized for its rich reddish-brown colour, attractive grain figure and wide range of joinery and furniture applications. The heartwood typically ranges from medium to dark reddish-brown and is especially valued for the decorative ribbon stripe that appears on quarter-sawn surfaces.
Depending on the cut of the timber, Sapele can also display attractive figured effects, including mottled, wavy or fiddleback figure, making it a popular choice where appearance matters as much as performance. Its grain is usually interlocked or wavy, and the texture is fairly fine, giving it an elegant and refined look once machined and finished.
Sapele offers a strong balance of durability, appearance and workability, which is why it is widely used in both traditional and contemporary woodworking projects.

Typical uses
Sapele hardwood boards are suitable for:
- Quality furniture making
- Cabinetmaking
- Interior joinery
- Solid doors and door components
- Shopfitting and office furniture
- Wall panelling and mouldings
- Countertops and work surfaces
- Flooring
- Boatbuilding and marine joinery
- Decorative veneers and specialist woodworking projects
Working properties
Sapele works well with both hand tools and woodworking machinery and is generally considered a reliable timber to machine. Because the grain is often interlocked, it can sometimes affect planing and machining quality, so sharp cutters and careful preparation are recommended to achieve the best result.
The timber:
- Machines well in most applications
- Nails and screws satisfactorily
- Glues well
- Sands and finishes to a very high standard
- Produces an excellent polished finish
Extra care may be needed when staining to ensure an even appearance, particularly on figured or interlocked-grain boards.
Durability and exterior use
Sapele is classed as moderately durable, making it suitable for many interior applications and selected exterior joinery where the timber is properly detailed, protected and maintained.
It is often chosen for doors, joinery and other projects where a hardwood with a refined appearance and reasonable durability is required. For exterior use, suitable finishing and ongoing maintenance will help preserve appearance and performance.
The sapwood is less durable than the heartwood and can be more vulnerable to insect attack, so this should be taken into account where relevant.
Seasoning and movement
Sapele dries fairly quickly, but it has a tendency to distort during seasoning if not handled correctly. As with all hardwoods, boards should be stored flat, supported properly and protected from rapid changes in moisture and temperature.
Once seasoned, Sapele has medium movement in service, making it suitable for many joinery and furniture applications when correctly prepared and installed.
Appearance and finishing
One of Sapele’s main attractions is its decorative appearance. Quarter-sawn boards can show a striking ribbon figure, while other cuts may reveal wavy or more dramatic figuring. This makes Sapele an excellent choice for projects where the timber itself is intended to be part of the visual appeal.
It responds particularly well to:
- Clear finishes
- Oils
- Waxes
- Stains
- Polishing systems
A well-prepared Sapele board can achieve a rich, elegant finish that enhances its natural depth and colour.
Natural timber variation
Sapele is a natural hardwood, so each board will vary in colour, grain, figure and texture. Some boards may appear straighter and more uniform, while others may show stronger ribbon stripe, wavy grain or other decorative figuring.
Natural features may include:
- Colour variation from medium to dark reddish-brown
- Ribbon stripe on quartered boards
- Wavy or interlocked grain
- Figured areas
- Small natural markings
- Minor surface checks or end splits
Product photographs and swatches should be treated as representative of the species rather than an exact match for every board supplied. These natural variations are part of the character and appeal of genuine Sapele hardwood.
