What do we stock?”

Wooden Field Gates

At W. Burton and Sons we supply wooden field gates to numerous fencing contractors, landscapers and farmers around the Midlands area. We pride ourselves on offering top quality gates which is why we have a regular client base. All our gates are handmade to give the very best possible finish. They are made using a softwood, Softwood is a type of wood that is cut from trees belonging to gymnosperms, such as coniferous trees.

Softwood trees, such as pine, cedar, larch, spruce and fir keep their leaves throughout the year and grow faster than hardwood. Consumer and contract law require that any product offered for sale must be fit for its intended use and impregnated with preservative to a specific standard.

Our gates are treated to a user class 3 (UC3) these are designed for outdoor use. and are treated to prevent wood decay or insect attack. The preservative must have been penetrated the wood at least 3mm depth.

The UC3 tanalising process itself consists of 5-stages.

  • The timber is loaded into a large treatment tank and put under a vacuum
  • The tank is then filled with the wood preservative
  • The whole tank is then put under hydraulic pressure forcing the preservative deep in to the timber.
  • The tank is then drained, and the vacuum broken, allowing the low pressure inside the timber to draw in any remaining preservative
  • The timber is then left to dry naturally

Once all these steps are carried out we are then in position to begin making the gates.

Our wooden gates are rough sawn 5 rail gates which offers both strength and sturdiness, they look just as good in a field gateway or in front of a property as they offer style and security.

The rails themselves are made using a Swedish redwood. This wood is selected to use specifically on the rails at it does not bend or twist meaning that the gate will stay strong and not bow over time. Hardwoods grow a lot slower making them more dense and therefore stronger.

It is crucial to use the correct wood for to produce a quality product fit for purpose and longevity.

All of the bolts and screws used on the gates are zinc coated to ensure they stand up to the elements outside.

How to Measure for Your Bespoke Gates

To measure for your bespoke gate, follow these simple steps:

  1. Where possible we highly recommend installing your gate posts before taking your measurements.
  2. Once your gate posts are installed take 3 measurements between your posts- one from the top, one from the middle and the final from the bottom.
  3. Reduce the smallest measurement by 30mm and driveway gates and reduce by 15mm for single gates. This will provide a neat fit, whilst leaving room for natural swelling of the timber during different weather conditions.
